Mark Lien & Josh Miller
AI is quickly becoming part of the lighting design toolbox, but it’s easy to get lost between hype and practical value. In this session, we will cover both sides: a high-level overview of what modern AI is (and isn’t), followed by practical examples of how AI can support lighting design and visualization workflows. We’ll also discuss the downsides such as accuracy issues, bias, privacy/IP considerations, and over-reliance along with simple guardrails for using AI responsibly.

Workshop: Designing For 30 Plus Years of Use
● Workshop
📍 Mt. Columbia
This interactive workshop addresses a single, urgent issue facing the lighting industry—how we design luminaires for longevity and sustainability—through two distinct but connected lenses. This interactive workshop addresses a single, urgent issue facing the lighting industry—how we design luminaires for longevity and sustainability—through two distinct but connected lenses. While the challenge is shared, the proposed solutions intentionally diverge, creating a productive dialogue about where responsibility and opportunity lie.
In the first section, Anne and Rachel will present research, interviews, and real-world project case studies that advocate for a fundamental shift in luminaire design: the return to replaceable LED components as a baseline expectation, not a future aspiration. Drawing parallels to earlier lighting technologies, they explore how durability, serviceability, and material responsibility were once standard—and why reclaiming those principles is essential to truly sustainable design and manufacturing today. Some manufacturers are achieving this today, but as an industry we need to advance to a unified standard.
The second section shifts from advocacy to application. Jim will give a brief history of the technical aspects of lighting fixtures by light source type and how LEDs are fundamentally different. Understanding these differences will be informative for fixture selection and from a maintenance standpoint. Then, with this knowledge, the workshop will move to a hands-on, practice-focused workshop centered on working within today’s product landscape. He guides participants through strategies for maintaining and servicing existing LED systems over their usable life. Attendees will review data sheets, installation instructions, and service manuals, and work directly with both operational and non-operational luminaires to practice troubleshooting, servicing, and informed product evaluation.
Together, this paired session invites participants into a dynamic conversation—challenging assumptions, examining tradeoffs, and equipping designers with both a vision for change and practical tools for action.read more

Since 1916, the National Park Service has inspired millions, offering spaces for discovery, reflection, and connection that span monuments, memorials, museums, lodges, caves, and vast untouched landscapes. But designing within these treasured places is unlike any other challenge. Every decision must balance preservation with progress. Each project carries the responsibility of long-term decision making, shaping not just today’s visitor experience, but that of generations to come.
From projects spanning the array of historic preservation and sensitive ecosystems to evolving visitor amenity expectations, wildfire and flood resilience, remote site logistics, and the protection of cultural and archaeological resources, these environments entail a deep level of thought, care, and creativity. Join us as we explore how thoughtful design, both architectural and lighting, can enhance these extraordinary places. Together, we’ll look at how we can elevate the experience operationally for visitors and families today… and for their children, grandchildren, and generations beyond.read more

Regardless of the application, the game changing optical lensing technology shows maximum vertical light intensity at a person's eye level. As a result, one can expect reductions in energy, labor, material, and operational costs. Furthermore, while direct glare is significantly reduced, shopper/worker visual acuity, visual comfort, and safety is enhanced. The lensed optics is primely suited for mid and higread more

🤖 Let AI help you determine which sessions to attend
Download the full session list and paste it into Claude (claude.ai).
Then paste a prompt like the example below — it gives the AI a role, context about the data, and a clear task.
Tip: This is a large session list. Claude (claude.ai) handles the full file reliably. Other tools like ChatGPT and Gemini may silently cut off the data — the verification step in the prompt will catch that.
Example prompt:
ROLE: Expert conference advisor for IES26: The Lighting Conference attendees CONTEXT: I'm pasting over 50 sessions for the IES26: The Lighting Conference.
I work in lighting - design, research, or specification. I want the technical papers most relevant to my practice, sessions on human-centric and daylighting topics, and good networking with other lighting professionals. GOAL: Pick the top 10 sessions for me. OUTPUT FORMAT: List in chronological order. Do NOT number them sequentially.
Instead, start each entry with its relevance rank in bold, like: Rank #3 of over 50 — Session Title.
Follow with the day and time, then 2-3 sentences on why it fits my goals. VERIFICATION: Before answering, confirm how many sessions you received.
You should have at least 50. If you received significantly fewer,
tell me immediately — my paste was probably truncated.
😎 How cool am I? 😎
Which sessions are right for you?
Describe yourself and what you want from IES26: The Lighting Conference. The more specific you are, the better this works.
You can also say how many you want or when you're free — “just my top 3”, “give me 20”, “only Friday afternoon”. You get 10 unless you ask for more.
There's a daily limit on the phone version, so it can stay free for everyone at the event. You can run it as many times as you want using your own AI account at home: scroll down, tap Copy prompt, and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini — free or paid account, the same session list, no daily limit.
